SERMON NOTES & discussing questions for Sunday 19 January
TAKING GROUND (From Joshua 6) – Ps Paul van Coller
God told Joshua to lead the Israelites into the promised land. Their first big challenge was to conquer the walled city of Jericho. God asked them to march around the city every day, with musicians leading them in praise.
After marching around Jericho each day, the Israelites returned to Gilgal. They did this for six days, and on the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times. Then they shouted when the trumpets blew, and the city walls fell down, giving them a miraculous victory!
At Gilgal the Israelites:
• rededicated their lives to God.
• celebrated the Passover.
• set up 12 stones to remember how God helped them cross the Jordan River.
This all helped them defeat Jericho in their hearts and minds before they defeated it physically.
